The parliamentary Anti-Mafia
Commission on Monday officially summoned Puglia Region President
Michele Emiliano for 2 May for a hearing on suspected mafia
infiltration in Puglia and Bari in particular after a string of
recent cases of mafia vote buying and other Mob-related
offences.
Earlier Monday Emiliano, a bigwig in the centre-left Democratic
Party (PD), denied reports he had asked not be summoned,
clarifying that he had simply asked for a postponement of his
hearing to avoid a clash with related Puglia political business.
Emiliano recently came under fire when an embarrassing video
emerged showing him 'entrusting' future Bari Mayor Antonio
Decaro, then a city councillor, to the sister of one of Bari's
14 Mob bosses.
The government has sent inspectors to verify mafia infiltration
in Bari, where Decaro, another leading PD member, says he has
decapitated the 14 clans.
